Railway self-service kiosks give passengers direct access to ticket searches, fare information, route details, and station services without going through a staffed counter. These terminals are commonly installed in ticket halls, station entrances, waiting areas, and other high-traffic passenger zones.


For this project, a 19-inch industrial panel PC was integrated into the railway kiosk as the main touchscreen and computing unit. The system runs Ubuntu-based kiosk software and supports passenger interaction, data communication, and connection with external kiosk devices.


1. Technical Requirements

The terminal needed to operate for long hours while remaining easy to read and use in a public railway environment. Since the computer is built directly into the kiosk enclosure, the selected hardware also had to cope with temperature changes, frequent touch operation, and occasional impact.


To address these environmental and operational needs, the system required:

  • 19-inch touchscreen suitable for ticketing and passenger information interfaces
  • 1000-nit high-brightness display for better visibility in bright station areas and semi-outdoor locations
  • 3 mm tempered cover glass to protect the display surface from repeated public use and accidental impact
  • -25°C to 75°C operating range for terminals exposed to seasonal temperature variation
  • 9–30V wide-voltage input for more flexible kiosk power integration
  • Ubuntu compatibility for the customer’s kiosk application
  • LAN and USB connectivity for network communication and peripheral devices
  • Compact all-in-one construction for installation inside the terminal enclosure

These functions were more relevant to the project than adding separate commercial computers and displays inside the kiosk.

2. Solution Implementation

The 19-inch panel PC was installed directly into the front section of the railway self-service terminal. Its display, touchscreen, computing platform, and communication interfaces are integrated into one industrial unit, which reduces the amount of internal cabling and hardware required inside the kiosk.


The system architecture:

Industrial Panel PC → Touch Interface → Ubuntu Kiosk Software → Railway Passenger Services


Through this integrated touch interface, the system supports key passenger self-services, including:

  • ticket search
  • route information
  • fare inquiry
  • station information
  • self-service operations

First, the 1280 × 1024 display provides enough screen space for menu navigation, journey details, fare data, and service instructions without making the interface overly dense.


Second, a 1000-nit screen was selected because railway terminals are not always installed under controlled indoor lighting. Kiosks positioned close to entrances, glass walls, or outdoor areas can receive strong ambient light, making standard commercial displays difficult to read.


Third, the 3 mm tempered glass cover also adds a practical layer of protection for a public-facing terminal. Passengers interact with the same screen throughout the day, so resistance to scratches, knocks, and repeated contact is more important than it would be in a closed industrial control cabinet.


Fourth, for the computing side, the Intel Core i5 platform provides enough performance to run the Ubuntu kiosk interface and handle routine passenger-service software without requiring a separate external PC.


Fifth, the available LAN and USB interfaces allow the terminal builder to connect other kiosk hardware as required, such as ticket printers, barcode readers, card readers, or communication modules.

 

3. Project Benefits

Using an integrated industrial panel PC simplified both the passenger-facing interface and the internal kiosk layout. The terminal manufacturer could build the application around one main computing platform instead of combining a separate monitor, touch controller, and embedded PC.


The deployment provided several practical benefits:

  • Clearer screen visibility in bright station and semi-outdoor environments
  • Better front-panel protection through the 3 mm tempered glass surface
  • Broader temperature tolerance for kiosks installed in less controlled environments
  • Simpler internal installation with the touchscreen and computer combined in one unit
  • Flexible power integration through the 9–30V DC input range
  • Ubuntu software compatibility for the existing kiosk platform
  • Straightforward peripheral expansion through LAN and USB connections
  • Reduced internal cabling compared with a separate PC-and-monitor arrangement

For passengers, the result is a single touchscreen interface for common railway services. For the kiosk manufacturer, it provides a simpler hardware platform that can be integrated into different terminal designs.
